And debt levels are rising. As of the second quarter of 2014, Canadian consumers owe $1.44 trillion, up from $1.42 trillion in the first quarter and $1.35 trillion a year ago. The average debt held by Canadians (excluding mortgages) is $20,759! The immediate future doesn’t look a lot brighter. Yes, the country’s economic outlook is encouraging, but the ultra-low interest rate environment is inspiring more and more Canadians to take on debt. This could cripple some families if interest rates start to rise in the near term.
